Introduction to 4×4 Techniques
The emphasis is and will always be on SAFETY.
- ALL training is conducted in a safe and controlled environment.
- You should not incur any vehicle damage if you remain on existing tracks and listen and watch your instructor who is always on hand to assist/advise.
- Any questions are welcomed – more interaction results in more knowledge shared.
Program for the day:
8:30 – 9:00: Arrival and registration – coffee and rusks available.
9:00 – 10:00: Theory:
Understanding the features and workings of your 4WD vehicle
- Discussion about 4WD and reasons for purchase – work/leisure
- Basic layout and explanation of the 4WD systems
- Understanding when to use high range and low range
- Purpose of transfer case and working thereof
- Traction aids – Traction control, Diff locks, Crawl control etc
- Hill Decent Control
- Vehicle/Dynamic Stability Control
- ABS – Anti-lock brake system and purpose thereof
- Auto vs Manual use off-road
- Understanding tyres and tyre pressures
- Driving dynamics – correct way to approach and drive obstacles
eg: sand, mud, rocks ,water etc
- Vehicle dynamics – approach, crossover and departure angles
Active and passive safety features of your vehicle – pros and cons off-road
- Seating position
- Safety belts
- Airbags
- Cargo and loose equipment – including passengers
- Windows – open or shut and when?
10:30 – 10:45 Comfort break
10:45 – 14:30 Practical on track instruction
- Understanding hand signals
- Steering technique correction and execution
- Negotiating ascents and descents – includes gear selection, crawl mode etc
- Stall start or failed hill climb – manual vs auto
- Water crossing – prep and post
- Traction control vs diff-lock – advantages, disadvantages
- Cross axle articulation, side inclines, ditch crossing, rock driving
Practical driving on natural trail – here you learn to apply all the techniques we covered in a controlled environment.
