Description
Our Eastern Cape Adventure takes in some of the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen. You will get to drive some of the well-known Ben 10 Challenge Mountain Passes and experience the hospitality of the Eastern Cape people. From the phenomenal Rhodes Hotel to the quirkiness of Bidstone Cottages’ Alan Isted. This is a relaxed getaway that will leave you wanting for more and keep bringing you back time after time.
Day 1: Meet at the historic Lord Fraser Guesthouse in Wepener.
Day 2: Depart after breakfast (8:30am) via Sterkspruit to Lundeans Nek Pass and on to Rhodes via the well-known steel bridge over the Bell River to Rhodes Hotel – our base for the next 3 nights.
Day 3: Depart after breakfast to Naude’s Nek Pass, stop at the base and visit the mini memorial for a short break before driving up the scenic pass. We stop at the crest at the viewpoint overlooking the valley below before heading to Tennahead Lodge for a comfort break and a cuppa. From here we head onto the TT pass (Tennahead – Tiffendell) all along the Lesotho border. It’s an interesting drive going from very easy to level 3 over its approximately 25km stretch. This is quite a full day and we can stop and do a light lunch along the way, each guys must just make provision for it. PLEASE no open fires
Day 4: After breakfast we head back up the Carlisle Hoekspruit Pass and once again past Tiffendale and then make our way to Volunteers Pass, a pass that is maintained by the local farmers. This is a relatively sometimes technical drive. Once we reach the bottom we make our way to the Bidstone Cottages for a lunch stop – the best pizzas around! We then follow a scenic circle route back to the Rhodes Hotel for dinner.
Day 5: Sadly it is time to head on home after breakfast. We drive to Barkley East to refuel before heading back to the N1 via Aliwal North.
The route is not a heavy 4×4 route and it is more about the mind blowing scenery that this area offers as well as driving 5 of the Ben 10 mountain passes in the area.
Our accommodation is in guesthouse and hotel with dinner and breakfast included. We need to make provision for snacks and light lunches whilst out on the passes for the day – except at Bidstone Cottages of course.
