Description

We travel to the North Western corner of Namibia known as the Kaokoveld.  It is the home of the Himba tribe who still uphold their traditions to this day.  Our adventure starts in the town of Kamanjab.

Day 1:  We meet up at Elisenhëim Guest Farm on the outskirts of Windhoek North. A very rustic campsite under huge trees with clean basic ablutions that still make use of a donkey for hot water! The restaurant offers great cold beers and meals!

Day 2:  We make our way north to the town of Kamajab. Our overnight camping spot is at OppiKoppi. They have a magnificent restaurant for meals. There are also chalets available but that would be for your own account. Great ablutions.

Day 3:   Today we head north to the town of Ruacana. We refuel and take a drive to the Ruacana Falls and take in the views before driving all along the Kunene River to our overnight spot at the Kunene River Lodge with its lush campsites under huge trees on the banks of the river with views over Angola. Great ablutions.

Day 4:  The drive along the Kunene can get interesting depending on what the rains have done in the region. Our aim is to reach the Epupa Falls to camp on the banks of the Kunene with views of the falls and Angola on the opposite banks. Cool down in the inviting pool or have a drink at the bar overlooking the falls. A perfect setting! Great ablution facilities available.

Day 5:  Today is the an interesting day as we make our way towards Van Zyl’s Pass, BUT,getting to the top of the pass is a much bigger challenge than the actual pass even though it has such a wild reputation. We camp at the community campsite. We get to do some sand driving in the process. Tonight calls for a proper camp fire to gather energy for the next day’s challenge. The campsite is wild camping with no facilities.

Day 6:  It is a slow drive along challenging tracks to reach the top of Van Zyl’s Pass. There is one specific spot that is a real challenge so we take our time and make sure we guide everyone down safely. When we reach the bottom of the pass, we have a lunch stop under the trees. From here we start making our way through the Marrienfluss – a vast grassland where you start finding the “fairy circles” Our aim is to reach what is known as Marble Camp, a community run campsite. There are basic ablution facilities

Day 7:  We make our way toward the settlement of Puros on the banks of the normally dry Hoariseb River. There might be emergency fuel available, but at a price! We camp at the community campsite which often has desert elephants visiting the campsite. This is almost paradise with outdoor abluition facilities. Time to relax under the trees and enjoy a cold one!

Day 8:  The aim today is take in some of the attractions in the area, the Jan Joubert Koppie, the Puros Canyon, which is a phenomenal drive down the river to reach the most beautiful spot, here we will do a lunch stop and relax. There is usually some water still in the river so it is a peaceful spot for lunch. We then start making out way back, hoping no-one gets stuck in the quick sand!

Day 9:  We drive further south to Palmwag Lodge where we can refuel once again, first time since Ruacana! Palmwag Lodge is this oasis in the middle of nowhere with great facilties and a perfect place to almost become human once again!

Day 10:  At Palmwag they have a vet fence that will confiscate any anumal products you might have. This is for the protection of foot and mouth disease. Our unltimate goal today is Swakopmund. It is a bit of a drive, but a scenic one all along the Skeleton Coast and we actually enter the park. Our overnight spot is at Alte Brücke in Swakomund with superb facilities. This is one of the best towns to visit!! There are a miriad of restuarants to choose from even though the campsite has one of the best available!

Day 11:  Today is an early start and is a dune driving day! We head out with a local guide and make our way to the protected Sandwhich Harbour Lagoon. This is loads of fun and you will be able to hone those sand driving skills!! We reach our accommodation late afternoon. This is also our last evening together.

Day 12:  Sadly time to say our goodbyes and start the long drive back home.
