Recovery Series #8: Mastering the Art of Winching

When it comes to off-road adventures and 4×4 recoveries, a winch is often seen as the hallmark of a serious overlander. It adds an unmistakable ‘adventure-ready’ factor to your vehicle—but with great power comes the need for great responsibility.

This is the eighth instalment in the Recovery Series by Bernie Williams, renowned 4×4 guide, instructor, and overlanding expert from Khwela 4×4. With over 25 years of experience in self-driven, guided overland trips, Bernie has seen winches save the day and, unfortunately, cause trouble in untrained hands. This guide combines his expertise with practical advice to help off-road enthusiasts fully understand the safe and efficient use of vehicle-mounted winches.

The Winch: More Than Just a Trophy

A winch is a powerful tool primarily designed to pull or lift, originating in industrial environments where precision and strength are critical. For off-road use, a winch becomes a vital safety net when vehicles are stuck in mud, on steep inclines, or amongst unforgiving terrain.

However, simply mounting a winch on your 4×4 won’t instantly prepare you for vehicle recovery. Many winch owners lack training and risk serious injury or damage when attempting to use it. Here’s the good news—with the right knowledge and equipment, this tool can safely get you out of challenging situations.

Do You Need a Winch on Your 4×4?

Before we get into the mechanics, ask yourself whether a winch is actually necessary for your type of adventure. Casual overlanders driving well-maintained trails may not need one, whereas hardcore explorers tackling rugged terrain regularly will value this tool.

Pros of having a winch:

  • Enables independent recovery when travelling solo.
  • Allows vehicle recoveries in extreme conditions (steep hills, deep mud, heavy snow).
  • Strengthens your recovery toolkit for multi-vehicle expeditions.

Cons:

  • Requires training to operate safely.
  • Adds significant weight to your vehicle.
  • High installation and maintenance costs.

Preparing Your 4×4 for a Winch

Installing a winch requires modifications. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Mounting Options:

Use a winch plate mounted behind the vehicle’s original bumper.

  • Install a replacement bull bar designed for winch use. Ensure it is certified as both winch-compatible and airbag-compatible.
  1. Weight Capacity:
  • Choose a winch rated at 1.5 times the weight of your fully loaded vehicle. For example, if your truck weighs 2000kg, select a winch rated at a minimum of 3000kg (or ~6,600lbs).
  1. Ropes vs. Cables:
  • Steel cables are robust but heavy and prone to kinking.
  • Synthetic ropes are lighter and safer (they don’t store kinetic energy), though they require more maintenance.
  1. Electrical Considerations:
  • Winches are power-hungry. Ensure your battery and alternator are capable of handling the load.

Bernie’s Tip: “When installing a winch, always double-check the mounting points and ensure they’re secured with high-strength bolts to handle heavy loads. Use a circuit breaker in the wiring for added safety and always route the cables away from sharp edges or moving parts to prevent wear or damage over time. A solid installation today means reliable performance when you need it most, so take the time to do it right.”

Winch Safety Tips and Procedures

Operating a winch can be dangerous without proper safety precautions. Here’s what every overlander should know before using one in the field.

Before You Start

  1. Inspect Your Equipment:
  • Check the winch’s cable or rope for fraying, kinks, or damage.
  • Ensure the cable is properly tensioned on the drum to prevent internal damage during use.
  1. Run a Test:
  • Plug in the remote and ensure the winch spools both in and out properly. Test functionality before leaving on an expedition, not while you’re already stuck.
  1. Wear Gloves:
  • Always wear sturdy gloves to protect your hands from sharp fibres or frayed cables.

During Recovery

  1. Anchor with Care:
  • Use a tree protector strap to avoid damaging trees or your winch cable. Ensure the anchor point (tree, boulder, or ground anchor) is sturdy enough to handle the load.
  1. Position Strategically:
  • Open the vehicle’s bonnet for added protection and stand behind the driver’s door while operating the winch remote.
  1. Use Dampers:
  • Place a weighted blanket, recovery strap, or wet towel over the cable or rope. This reduces recoil in the event of a break, minimising risk of injury or damage.
  1. Stay Focused:
  • Never step over a loaded winch cable. Always walk around the vehicle, and ensure bystanders are at a safe distance.
  1. Short Pulls:
  • Perform 30-second pulls with breaks to prevent overheating the winch motor.

Bernie’s Tip: “Keep a recovery damper handy at all times. If the line snaps, the damper reduces the whip effect, protecting both you and your vehicle from potential harm.”

Regular Maintenance is Key

Once you’ve completed a winching operation, follow these steps to keep your gear in top condition:

Clean and Inspect:

  • Lay out synthetic ropes after use, wash them with water (no detergents), and dry them before storage to prevent mould.

Re-Wind Properly:

  • Re-spool the cable or rope under tension to prevent internal twists or loose winding.

Protect Against Water:

  • Although many winches are water-resistant, prolonged immersion can lead to corrosion. If submerged, service your winch as soon as possible.

Bernie’s Tip: “Don’t forget to spool out your synthetic rope or steel cable and rewind it under tension every few uses. This maintains even winding and prevents kinks or weak points.”

Advanced Tip: Use a Snatch Block

A snatch block is a pulley system that enhances your winch’s capabilities by doubling its pulling strength while halving the load on the winch. However, this technique also slows down the winching speed, so make sure to use it strategically.

Bernie’s Tip: “Use a tree protector strap or a bridle when securing your winch to an anchor point. It not only spares environmental damage but also improves your recovery’s stability by distributing the load evenly.”

Why Training Matters

A winch is one of the most powerful and potentially dangerous tools in a 4×4 recovery toolkit. Attending a hands-on recovery course is essential to becoming proficient in winching techniques. If safety isn’t your top priority, you risk damaging your vehicle, harming others, or even causing serious injury.

Bernie Williams offers expert-guided 4×4 recovery and winching courses at Khwela 4×4. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced overlander looking to hone your skills, these courses will prepare you for real-world challenges.

Bernie’s Tip: “Training isn’t just about learning how to use your gear – it’s about building the confidence to make the right decisions under pressure. When you’ve practised recovery techniques in a controlled environment, you’ll stay calm and act effectively during real-world challenges. Remember, off-road adventures can be unpredictable, and a well-trained driver is the best tool in any recovery situation.”

Take Charge of Your Recovery Skills

A winch can transform your overland adventures, offering peace of mind and a reliable lifeline in challenging terrain. But it’s not just about owning the equipment; it’s about mastering its use. From inspection to operation and maintenance, every step matters in ensuring your safety and your vehicle’s longevity.

If you’re ready to take your off-road skills to the next level, explore Khwela 4×4’s training programmes or book an overland adventure to put your training into action. After all, the road less travelled is safest with the right gear and expertise.
