Frequently Asked Questions
Discover Khwela 4×4’s expertise in self-driven trips and training. Our FAQ guides you through your adventure.
No, a standard 4×4 will be able to do all of our adventures. You need the basics to enjoy yourself. A decent quality tent, a good quality sleeping bag, a comfortable stretcher or mattress to sleep on, cooking utensils, camping chair and a quality 12v fridge that runs off a separate auxillary battery. A quality air compressor, tyre gauge and puncture repair kit as well as basic recovery equipment. A 55L water tank will also take you a long way.
Our adventures are limited to 6 vehicles i.e 12 pax. The only time the group is larger is for example with a Namib Desert trip where the concession holder requires a minimum of 16 – 18 participants.
This is almost like asking “how long is a piece of string”. Ideally, we would want to be in camp by 16:00pm at the latest HOWEVER there is no way of knowing what eventualities surprise you along the way, getting stuck in sand or mud can keep you busy for hours and will create havoc with any itinerary. BUT in a perfect world, your day will start around 8:30am with enough stops along the way and in theory should be done by 16:00pm.
All park and camping fees where applicable are included in the price. Any activities such as boat cruises and game drives UNLESS stated otherwise. A competent and experienced guide in a fully equipped vehicle. Two radios. All admin in terms of booking process is covered.
We travel to the bush or remote areas “to get away” from the digital world. Most campsites near cities offer some form of connectivity. The option is make use of an E-sim or buy a local sim card for access. Bear in mind that some of the places we visit there is no connectivity. We do at all times have a satellite phone on hand for any emergencies.
As a rule, we do not. A lot of the camping facilities do have restuarants. We can however, if it is a group booking and they require meals, assist with that, but generally speaking our adventures are “self – catered”
Probably the most frequent question we get asked. Unfortunately, we have been conditioned in South Africa to regard everything and everyone with suspicion. The short answer is YES, it is safe. In the bigger towns and cities, you will always find petty crime so being aware of your surroundings, will go a long way.
In terms of safety in the bush, we adhere to strict protocols, especially in unfenced areas in Botswana and Namibia. Unfortunately small children, even though they are just having fun, to a wild animal sounds like a distress call and will attract attention from the wrong crowd, such as hyeana etc.
Generally we do not like to allow children younger than 6 years old to do these kinds of adventures, and is purely because of their own safety, having said that I have had many well behaved children over the last 25 years on adventures without incident, it’s a simple matter of listening to advice.
Yes you do. Different brands have different systems and we focus on teaching you in your 4×4 so that you get to know the different functions and features of your specific vehicle.
We start with a theory lecture of around 1 hour, where we explain how 4×4 system work, different chassis and suspension setups, transfer case and it’s working and why it is important, different traction aids such as traction control and diff-locks, the importance of proper tyre management and tyre pressures.
We then move on to the 4×4 track where you get to apply what was covered in the lecture and we gradually increase the challenges of the obstacles you negotiate.
After the practical training, we do certification and feedback session about the day and allow for question and answer session.
Typically between 4 – 5 hrs depending on how many participants there are.
If you listen and apply what was taught in the lecture, the chances of vehicle damage is very slim, you will be assisted by an instructor to guide you through obstacles.

We had the privilege to be part of a 4x4 training day at de Wildt with Bernie. What a awesome experience. We don’t drive off-road every day, so we forget things. Great day out with Bernie all exercises done in controlled manner. Wel managed, no damage to vehicles. And to experience this with your friends! Even better. Thank you Bernie!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An unforgettable Kalahari adventure with Khwela 4x4! My Dad and I recently had the privilege of exploring Mabuasehube in Botswana with Bernie Williams from Khwela 4x4, and what an incredible experience it was! The vast open pans, beautiful landscapes, wildlife, spectacular sunsets and evenings around the campfire made this a trip we'll remember for a very long time. But what really made the experience exceptional was Bernie himself. His knowledge, experience and genuine passion for overlanding are second to none. Bernie is one of those rare individuals who genuinely goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has the best possible experience. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Whether it's lending you equipment you don't have, helping with something around camp, offering advice on your vehicle or sharing his extensive 4x4 knowledge, Bernie is always willing to help. You quickly realise you're travelling with someone who not only knows his stuff but genuinely enjoys sharing that knowledge with others. And then there's Bernie around the campfire! Always ready with a good story, plenty of laughs and never one to miss an opportunity to crack a joke. It's these moments, together with the adventure itself, that make a trip truly memorable. The entire experience strikes a wonderful balance between adventure, safety, learning and simply enjoying the beauty of the African wilderness. But I think the best way to sum up our experience is this: After we parted ways at the end of the trip, I kept finding myself reaching for the radio while driving, wanting to chat to Bernie about something along the way. I reckon that says it all. You start the journey with a guide and finish it feeling like you've made a good friend. Bernie, thank you for an unforgettable adventure, the knowledge shared, the laughs and the memories. I can wholeheartedly recommend Khwela 4x4 to anyone looking for a genuine African overlanding experience. Until the next adventure, Bernie!
Owner's reply
What an incredible message. Thank you so much for sharing this. The fact that you found yourself reaching for the radio afterwards really does say it all! We’re so glad the journey left you with great memories, plenty of laughs and, most importantly, a new friendship. Bernie will treasure these words.Posted on Google![]()

Awesome 3-night 4x4 trip with Bernie this August! My brother and I had an unforgettable time. Bernie is a true industry expert whose many years of experience and deep technical knowledge shine through in everything he does. It was highly educational, well-organized and great fun. Hands down a five-star experience—we will definitely be booking with Khwela 4x4 again!

★★★★★ An unforgettable Namaqua & West Coast Adventure with Khwela 4x4 Adventures. A special thank you to Bernie for his passion, knowledge, patience, and outstanding leadership. His technical expertise helped resolve problems on two vehicles in our group, and he even took the time to assist other travellers outside our group with advice and support. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We highly recommend Khwela 4x4 Adventures and look forward to our next trip!

We completed two unforgettable tours with Bernie Williams of Khwela 4x4 Adventures this August, both exceeding our expectations. The first took us from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side, with memorable stops in Botswana at the Makgadikgadi Pans, Elephant Sands and Chobe, including a wonderful riverboat safari. Beautiful landscapes and wildlife made it a truly special journey. Our second adventure was a 10-day crossing of the Namaqua EcoTrail along South Africa’s West Coast: wild camping, spectacular scenery, rocky trails and challenging dunes. It was pure bliss. Bernie is not only an outstanding guide who knows the best routes and hidden spots, but also a patient, knowledgeable instructor for anyone keen to improve their 4x4 skills. These two trips gave us invaluable experience and confidence for our big Africa journey next year. We wholeheartedly recommend Khwela 4x4 Adventures for an authentic and memorable overland experience. Bernard and Sandrine, the Gourmet Nomads.

Thank you, Bernard and Sandrine! Vic Falls via Botswana and then the Namaqua EcoTrail, all in one August. It was a pleasure guiding you both on two very different adventures. I'm thrilled you feel ready for your big Africa trip next year. Safe travels, and we'd love to have the Gourmet Nomads back on the trail anytime!Posted on Google![]()

Bernie is master at his craft. From 4x4 Driver Training, Advise and Trips. I have had the privilege of joining Bernie on some of his trips... Well planned, executed and in one word: Awesome! My recent interaction with Bernie, was about a decent GPS replacement, and the latest was on Satellite Phones for those Solo trips. Again, Bernie delivered with sound advise and contact details! Thank you Bernie PS. Keep me on your list for the Gonarezhou trip
Owner's reply
Braam thanks so much for the kind words and support! Really appreciate you joining us on the trips, it’s always a pleasure having you along. Glad the advice on the GPS and sat comms helped as well. We’ll definitely keep you in mind for Gonarezhou. It’s going to be a proper adventure! Looking forward to the next one 👍Posted on Google![]()

I bought the 4x4 one-on-one training with Bernie for my boyfriend’s birthday, and it was honestly excellent. We learned so much, and Bernie even let me join in 😉 We enjoyed both him and the experience so much that we’re already planning to do an overland trip with him this year! It’s not often you find someone who can teach you properly and keep you laughing the whole time. Thank you, Mr. Williams, for an incredible day and for sharing so much knowledge! I’d also highly recommend this course to other women—Bernie was patient, explained everything clearly, and I finally understand 4x4ing… and what a damn diff lock does 😂
Owner's reply
Thank you so much for this incredible review, it really means a lot. I’m glad you both enjoyed the one‑on‑one training, and even more so that it helped demystify 4x4ing (yes, that diff lock 😄). It’s always a pleasure working with people who are keen to learn, ask questions, and have a good laugh along the way. I truly believe off‑road driving should be empowering, especially when the fundamentals are explained clearly and without pressure. I’m looking forward to hitting the trail with you again on an overland trip soon. Thanks again for the support and recommendation, it was a great day out.Posted on Google![]()

If you're looking for a well-organized, memorable overlanding experience with a guide who truly knows his craft, I can highly recommend traveling with Bernie. I recently had the pleasure of traveling with Bernie on an overlanding tour to Mabuasehube, and it was an unforgettable experience. Bernie is incredibly knowledgeable about the area, from the main highlights to the more unique, off-the-beaten-path spots that really make the journey special. The tour was very well structured, striking a great balance between adventure and comfort, and it offered excellent value for money. Bernie is also exceptionally well prepared for anything that might come up along the way, which gave me a real sense of confidence throughout the trip. What stood out most was his approach to guiding — cautious and safety-conscious, always doing his best to avoid unnecessary risks, but at the same time willing to explore less-traveled routes to make the adventure even more exciting.
Owner's reply
Thank you for sharing your fantastic experience with Bernie! We're thrilled you found the tour both safe and adventurous, with a perfect balance of comfort and exploration. Your kind words mean a lot and will inspire future travelers!Showing our latest reviews
